>>>Reflection by Christal Wang
If it’s not because of the class, I think I will never see this
movie by myself. I seldom watch tragedies, especially about wars, for I
don’t want to experience such pain and misery. The ending was totally
unexpected, as at first I thought it would no doubtable be a satisfying
and happy story. It was so unforgettably touching that after a long
time, I can still feel the sadness now. The story is simple, but heavy
to hold.
Obviously, this key word is for Bruno. The nine-year-old boy
knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious
to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by
his country. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable
home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to
do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a
strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence
and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of a striped
In their friendship, there are the part of fault, betrayal and
selfishness, but they are just the narrative part. They played chess,
shared food, and felt the innocent happiness through the fence, knowing
very few about their extreme difference. Although gradually they
realized that they were enemies to some extend, the two young boys
described the nature of human beings exactly: to love.
Just as the movie has said, childhood us measured out by sounds
and smells and sights, before the dark hour of reason grows.
The sufferers may not be the one who suffers the most, but the
very criminals who made the thing happen. The parent lose their dear
ones, to the darkness of holocaust, to the people who are blindfolded by
the leader ‘Heil Hitler’, and also, to themselves.
Seeing the father express his hidden feeling under the glory
uniform, I really wnat to say that he deserves it. However, why should
Bruno die to give his father a punishment? Why the innocent kids should
do this part? Why?
The most painful part for me is the family relationship which is
badly fell apart because of the father’s deeds. Like most people in the
present day, the mother was hoping for peace, while Ralf, a Nazi
soldier, were used to killing Jewls. So the relationship between the
father and mother has already had a big problem, about their beliefs and
opinions of wars.
And there were loneliness among all the people. Bruno found no friends
to play with, Elsa had no one to tell her bitterness, and Ralf didn’t
want any one of his family to know about his military secrets.
Therefore, the family was covered with misery and pain.
When I saw the ending, I thought I won’t watch this movie
anymore, for I feel extremely desperate. But when I went out of the dark
classroom, seeing the sun shining above my head, I was deeply moved, and
suddenly, I felt a great power in my blood. We can’t change the cruel
history, because it was made by all the factors, like the society, the
people, the background. But what we can do is to treasure our peaceful
life, our wonderful family background, our pure childhood, and our
expected future.

The story happened during the Second World War. A boy called Bruno who
was the son of an Nazi officer, moving to the concentration camps where
he called “farm” with his father and mother. They loved him so much and
don’t want him to know where it was and stopped him to explore there.
But he finally went there and meet a boy called shmuel of his age, he
was a Jew, they became good friends and they played together although
separated by barbed wire. He was very stranged why they all wear striped
pajamas and why his teacher told him all Jews were very bad people and
why they not be regarded as people. One day Bruno was wearing shwuel’s
clothes in the concentration camps, but unfortunately, the Nazi officer
was going to kill the people in the camp, so he was killed together with
Jews. When they were being killed, they hold each other’s hand. When his
Nazi father realized he went to the camp and be killed, he screamed out
his name loudly.
From the movie, I saw the pure friendship under the cruel war, I saw the
beautiful childlike heart of them, I saw the love of his father not just
the cruel.
